The department of Biotechnology was established in the Collage of Science / Al Nahrain University in year 1991. It was built on the futuristic scientifically vision that extrapolate to future country's need's throughout the working labor in the field of life application sciences. The biotechnology is considered as a rapid evolving specialization with a variety of scientific mattress's that include animals, plants, microbiology, genetic engineering and other relevant sciences.

Practical work areas for graduates

1. work in all state institutions especially the ones dealing with medical, pharmaceutical, agricultural and biological fields.
2. To work in private sectors in construction areas only with the one that has the relation with the department's specialization.
3. Providing modern universities specialized cadre in the areas of biotechnology.

 

General lines of undergraduate's studies

1. Study various microorganisms and their applications in various fields of life and taking full advantage of their products.
2. Plant study and how to take advantage of diverse products as a source of food and medicine, in addition to texture farming and its modern applications in a way of secondary metabolism production and the devise of new varieties.
3. Study of genetic modification of various organisms using modern methods in genetic engineering objects.
4. Study modern methods to clear the environment from various pollution which use modern microbial and plant ways just in low prices.

Department’s Study Plan.

The plan of the department includes academic and scientific plan through the curricula and course which are:

1. Prepare a skilled specialized technical staff fulfilled with basic information necessary for bio-technical research.
2. Develop capabilities and experience for both practical and theoretical knowledge for the department graduators to work and engage in various state institutions, which are specialized in research and applications of bio-technology.
3. The ongoing modernization of the department's curricula to keep up with modern developments and scientific progress in the various disciplines of bio-technology to make students fully aware and to keep them updated to modern discoveries that takes place globally in this field.
4. To prepare scientific and academic students to complete higher education through the theme graduation research which is proposed in the fourth stage, which students do their scientific research for two semesters under the supervision of professors in the department as well as seminars offered by the students to refine their talents and scientific skills to complete higher education.
5. Open training courses, scientific seminars and workshops for employees of state institutions related to the themes of bio-technology to develop their own scientific experience to process in the various disciplines of the department.

 

Future plan for bio-technology department
Development accurate branches in the department that aims to grant Master degrees and Ph.D. degrees in the departments accurate specialization to keep up with the global evolution in those disciplines and upgrading the professors in the department through training courses and fellowships to refine their scientific and academic talents within the disciplines of bio-technology.

Second: admission to postgraduate studies:
College working on the application conditions for students admission in postgraduate studies approved by the Council of the Collage of Science / Al-Nahrain University controlled by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, with some additional conditions concerning the scientific department, namely:

1. The ratio of acceptance of bio-technology graduators from universities in Iraq is about 70%.
2. The ratio of acceptance of other graduators in Science / Life Sciences and graduators of University of Technology / Department of Bio-technology, and graduates of the College of Agriculture and graduates of the College of Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine, 30% are competing for outstanding students on the five department specialties which is documented in the Registration division at the college.
