A discussion session in the Department of Biology on the impact of the Acanthamoeba parasite on the cornea of the eye was organized by the Department of Biology at the College of Science, Al-Nahrain University. The session was presented by Assistant Lecturer Mona Bahaa Al-Din Haif, titled "Isolation and Molecular Detection of Acanthamoeba Parasite in Iraqi Patients with Keratitis." The session addressed a recent scientific study that focused on the Acanthamoeba parasite and its effects on the human eye, as it is one of the pathogens that may pose a risk to human health. The researcher reviewed the use of polymerase chain reaction technology and molecular sequencing analysis (T3, T4, T11) to identify the parasite for the first time in Iraq. The study also highlighted the risks of the parasite, especially for contact lens users, and emphasized the importance of raising awareness among doctors and specialists about its spread. The results indicated that most Acanthamoeba isolates carry accompanying infections, whether bacterial, viral, or fungal, which enhances their danger and contributes to the transmission of these infections. The episode called for taking the necessary preventive measures to limit the spread of the parasite, and pointed to additional studies to determine the most effective ways to treat it and reduce its impact, especially since advanced infection may lead to blindness. The seminar concluded with a positive interaction from the attendees who praised the importance of the research and recommended intensifying efforts to educate the community about the dangers of the parasite and ways to prevent it.
