The doctoral thesis in the Department of Chemistry at Al-Nahrain University, titled
"Extraction of Some Heavy Metals Using a Modified Polymer through Chemical Techniques,"
was conducted by the student Sihem Alwan Shakir.
The study aims to prepare modified polymers through the condensation reaction of methyl polymer with various amine compounds to obtain new materials with distinctive properties. The modified polymers were characterized using multiple scientific techniques and utilized as an adsorbent material for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions, which are among the most significant environmental pollutants threatening the ecological system.
The results of the study demonstrated the effectiveness and efficiency of the modified polymers in removing and extracting the heavy metal ions under investigation. It indicated the potential for using and developing this method to mitigate the environmental pollution problem caused by increased levels of these elements in aquatic ecosystems, particularly those near factories and power generation stations.
The thesis was completed under the supervision of:
Professor Dr. Ahmed Abdul Razzaq Ahmed
and
Assistant Professor Dr. Diaa Shamkh Zghair.
