A lecturer at the College of Science publishes a research on the relationship between cholesterol and cytokines in cutaneous leishmanias. The lecturer in the Department of Applied Pathological Analysis, Dr. Ivan Hamid Suleiman Al-Mandalawi, published a scientific research entitled:
"Immuno-Informatics Insight into the Relationship Between Cholesterol and Cytokines in Cutaneous Leishmaniasis"
in the Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal (SQUMJ), a journal indexed within Scopus, PubMed, and WHO in Medicus for Eastern Mediterranean Region. The study examined the relationship between total cholesterol (TC) levels and different types of cholesterol, including very low density lipoprotein (VLDL-C), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), and high-density (HDL-C) cholesterol, as well as triglycerides (TG) and cytokines, such as interleukin-10 (IL-10), interleukin-12 (IL-12), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in people with cutaneous leishmaniasis. The results showed changes in the levels of lipids and lipoproteins in patients, with two immune units identified within the disease, suggesting a complex interaction that warrants further research to understand its role in the development of the disease.
